전국 댐 안전 인식의 날은 미국 전역에서 부적절하게 건설되거나 유지 관리되는 댐의 잠재적 위험에 대한 대중의 인식을 높이기 위한 것임.

전국 댐 안전 인식의 날은 5월에 발생한 펜실베이니아 주 존스타운의 사우스 포크 댐 사고( 31, 1889, 미국 역사상 최악의 댐 관련 재해로 기록됨)를 추모하기 위해 제정되었으며, 2,200 의 인명 손실이 발생했음.

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is the state agency responsible for regulating most dams in the Commonwealth, where more than 2,400 regulated dams—the majority privately owned—exist, and where state law requires owners to properly construct, alter, operate, and maintain their dams to protect life and property; and

WHEREAS, dams in Virginia range from low- to high-hazard depending on their size, location, and downstream development; and

WHEREAS, 미 육군 공병대의 국가 댐 인벤토리(NID)에 따르면 Virginia 댐의 평균 수명은 78 년입니다.

WHEREAS, Virginians may access their property’s potential flood risk during a dam failure by inputting their address into the Virginia Flood Risk Information System and Dam Safety Inventory System; and

모든 댐 소유주, 정부 공무원, 응급 구조대원, 비상 관리 요원, 하류 주민 및 시민은 댐 안전의 중요성과 적절한 유지 관리 및 운영의 필요성을 인식하도록 권장합니다;

이제, 저 아비게일 D. 스팬버거는 버지니아주에서 5월 20일( 31, 2026)을 댐 안전 인식의 날로 지정하며, 모든 시민의 주의를 환기시키기 위해 이 준수 사항을 요청합니다.
